About the Sitemap generator

A sitemap, or sitemap.xml, is a structured list of a site's important URLs that helps search engines discover and index pages faster, especially for new sites or sites with weak internal linking. Writing this file by hand, with its XML structure and loc, changefreq and priority tags, is slow and error-prone for non-technical users.

How to use it

  1. 1Enter your site's domain.
  2. 2Write the page paths line by line.
  3. 3Save the XML output as a sitemap.xml file.

Why use this tool?

  • Generates a valid sitemap.xml file following the standard Sitemaps.org protocol
  • Add an unlimited number of paths, one per line
  • Set the update frequency (daily to yearly) to match your content type
  • Set a priority for each page to give crawlers a relative hint
  • Output is ready to save directly as sitemap.xml in your domain root
  • Easy to use for small or personal sites without an SEO plugin

Worked examples

A simple company site

Entering the domain https://example.com and the paths /, /about and /contact produces three <url> blocks, each with the full address such as https://example.com/about.

Setting priority for the homepage

You can set priority to 1.0 for the homepage so crawlers understand it matters more than other pages, while a contact page can carry a lower priority such as 0.3.

A frequently updated blog

For a news or blog section publishing daily, choosing changefreq as daily suggests to crawlers that these pages should be revisited more often.

Adding the sitemap to robots.txt

After downloading sitemap.xml and uploading it to your site root, add the full address such as https://example.com/sitemap.xml to the Sitemap line in robots.txt so crawlers find it easily.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I submit my sitemap?

In Google Search Console, and also on the Sitemap line in the robots.txt file.

How many URLs are allowed in one sitemap?

Up to 50,000 URLs or 50 MB; beyond that you need to split the sitemap into multiple files.

Does a sitemap improve my search ranking?

No, a sitemap alone doesn't boost ranking; its role is to help pages get discovered and indexed faster, especially for large or new sites lacking sufficient internal links.

Do I still need this for a WordPress site?

Most WordPress SEO plugins like Yoast or Rank Math generate sitemaps automatically; this tool is more useful for simple sites, landing pages or plain HTML sites without such a plugin.

How often should I update my sitemap?

Whenever you add or remove pages it's best to regenerate the sitemap and resubmit it in Search Console so the search engine's listing matches your site's real structure.

What's the difference between sitemap.xml and robots.txt?

robots.txt tells crawlers where not to go, while sitemap.xml is the opposite — a list of pages you want crawlers to definitely see and index; the two files complement rather than replace each other.
